BIGS Goalball Tournament

Updated: Jan 8, 2020

Butler BIGS hosts second annual Goalball Tournament supporting the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

INDIANAPOLIS- a new sport for many came to Butler's campus this December as BIGS held their second annual Goalball Tournament. Goalball is a paralympic sport for the blind and visually impaired. The tournament had 3 v 3 games where students were blindfolded so they were unable to see just as those who play the sport are. The object of the game is to roll a ball with bells in it towards the other teams goal as the opposing team dives to block the ball with their body.

The Event

"Goalball was a great event that brought together individuals on campus from all different involvements. It was fantastic to see people get excited about a brand new sport in the name of philanthropy" - Drew Smith, Special Events.

The event had 10 different teams competing for victory. Hosted at the Butler HRC, students brought their A-game as they immersed themselves into a new sport that caused them to abandon their sight and rely on their sense of touch and sound. After 5 rounds of bracket-style competition, it was the Sigma Chi team that took the win.

ISVBI

"ISBVI is an organization I've always been attached to. I'm close with a lot of the students there. Anything I can do to help, I will" - Maggie Rohrer.

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) is located in Indianapolis, Indiana and was established in 1847. The school helps students who are blind or have low vision master core curriculum. They expose these students to an expanded core curriculum that teaches them how to navigate their physical, social, and personal worlds. ISBVI's vision is to provide diverse and salient opportunities for students, educators, and families to access and benefit from these resources.

What We Raised

The Goalball Tournament was a great success raising just over $2000 for ISBVI.
